Fishing Report

September 10th, 2024

Welcome to the North Park Anglers’ fishing report!

The current flow of the North Platte River at Northgate Canyon is 83 CFS (cubic feet per second). This is an excellent flow for this time of the season. The weather keeps awarding us cool nights and afternoon thunderstorms, providing significant flows and cool water temperatures. Fishing on the moving water from here on out should be good. We suggest exploring the various access points to the North Platte in the valley and the canyon. While the tributaries are an option, they are currently low, making fishing more technical. Tricos are out in large numbers throughout the valley, so having Tricos spinners in your tackle box would be beneficial!

All the valley lakes, including the Delaney Buttes and Lake John, are fishing well.

Please read further for more detailed info on our fisheries.

Meadow Streams:

The meadow streams are a little on the low side right now. Dry dropper is the name of the game right now, with a big chubby or other terrestrial pattern up top and various attractor nymphs underneath. Throwing brightly colored streamers is always worth a shot, too. Various attractors and jig-style bugs have been getting a few fish as well. Look to see Caddis, Tricos, BWO’s, and a few golden stones.

North Platte

(Canyon Section)

The water level in the Canyon is a little low, but it is still at an excellent level for fishing. You can find fish in the various rapids sections where the water is faster, deeper, and cooler. Regarding insects, look for Caddis, Tricos, Rusty Spinners, a few PMDs, Yellow Sallies, and some Golden Stones. Caddis are more active in the evenings, while Tricos and Rustys are active in the late morning. The fish that are sipping will move out of the rapids and feed in the calm slick areas above and below the rapids. With the hot weather, we recommend fishing early and trying to get off the water midday while water temps are peaking. Good Luck!

(Valley Section)

The Platte in the Valley is at an excellent level. The flows are around 120 cfs, and wade fishing is fantastic. Dry/ dropper fishing has been the name of the game throughout the day, and dry fly fishing in the early morning has been good. Caddis, Trico’s, Craneflies, and a few random bugs should join the party.

Note* The valley section is upstream of where the North Fork of the North Platte, Michigan, and Illinois Rivers dump into the Platte. The gauge we watch at North Gate, where we report flows from, will always be slightly more significant than what the valley section reads.

FYI: North Platte Flows in North Gate Canyon (Routt Access to Pickeroon)

0-750 CFS Good Wade fishing level

500-4000 Good Float/ Fishing Level

4000 and above is best for Whitewater

Delaney Buttes, Lake John, and Cowdrey Lake

The chironomids are out and about on the lakes currently. Fishing has been best earlier in the day when the wind is down, but the fish are eating throughout the day. Recently, fishing under an indicator in 10-20ft of water has been productive. Chironomids, Leeches, and thin mints have been the go-to on indicator rigs, and stripping a crayfish, boatman, leech, or streamer has also been great! The chironomid hatch has been intense in the evening, and the dry-fly fishing has been very good. Look for Griffith gnats and small beetles to get the job done.

High Country Lakes and Streams

The high country lakes, such as Big Creek, Chambers, and Joe Wright, are open for the year. We hear Joe Wright is producing good action for grayling. July and August are great times to head to the high country lakes in the Zirkels, Rawah’s, or Never Summer mountains. Lakes like Rainbow, Big Horn, Katherine, Clear, Kelly, or American Lakes are great places to check out.
